# Get paid: record and match customer payments

When a customer pays, record it against their invoice so your books show the invoice as settled. This article covers every way to do that, and where to see the payments you've recorded.

## Get paid

There are three ways to record that an invoice has been paid. Use whichever matches how the money arrived.

| Method | Use it when |
| ---- | ---- |
| Receive payment | You know a customer paid and want to record the amount, method and account. |
| Match with bank deposit | The deposit is already in your bank feed. |
| Mark as paid | The invoice was paid in full and you don't need the details. |

### Record a payment

Click **Receive payment** at the top of the Invoices list, in a row menu, or inside an invoice.

1. **Amount received.** What the customer paid. **Pay all in full** fills in their whole open balance.
2. **Deposit to.** The account the money landed in: a bank account or Undeposited Funds.
3. **Apply to invoices.** Tabby applies the payment to the oldest invoice first. Change any amount to split it your way.
4. **Email a payment receipt to the customer.** Ticked by default.
5. **Summary.** How much is being applied, to how many invoices, and how many will stay partly paid.

Also set the **Payment date**, which can't be in the future, and the **Payment method**: Cash, Check, Credit card, Debit card, Bank transfer (ACH), Wire transfer, PayPal, Venmo, Zelle or Other. **Reference no.** and **Memo** are optional. The memo is visible only to your team.

Click **Record payment**. The button shows the amount you're recording.

### Partial payments

If the customer pays less than the invoice, enter the amount they paid. The row shows what's left, and the invoice moves to **Partially paid** with the remaining balance in the list. Record the rest the same way when it arrives.

### Record payments for several invoices

Tick the invoices in the list. A bar appears at the bottom.

* **Receive payment** opens the payment dialog with those invoices already ticked.
* **Match deposit** matches the selection to a bank deposit.
* **Send reminders** emails the overdue invoices in your selection.
* **Download** saves the selected invoices as PDFs.

Drafts and paid invoices in your selection are skipped, and Tabby tells you so.

### Match an invoice with a bank deposit

When the payment has already come in through your bank feed, match it. Tabby records the payment and links the deposit, so the deposit isn't counted as new income.

1. Open the row menu and choose **Match with bank deposit**.
2. Find the deposit. Search by name or amount, or change the account and date filters. **Unmatched only** hides deposits that are already linked.
3. Select the deposit.
4. Click **Match and record payment**.

If the deposit is smaller than the invoice, Tabby shows the difference at the bottom. Click the link that offers to record the deposit as a partial payment. Tabby applies the deposit and leaves the rest due. You can also lower the **Payment** amount on the left yourself.

You can start from the other side too. See **Match a transaction** in Bank feeds and **Match a payment to an invoice** in Review.

### Mark an invoice as paid

Open a sent or overdue invoice and click **Mark as paid** in the summary. Use this when the invoice was paid in full and you don't need to record the method or account.

### Activity and payments

**Activity & payments** in the row menu shows the invoice's totals and its history: when it was created, when it was sent, each reminder and each payment.

To undo a payment, click **Remove** beside it and confirm. The amount goes back onto the invoice.

### Online payments with Stripe

Every sent invoice has a payment link. To let customers pay by card or bank transfer from the invoice email, connect Stripe. The **Online payments** section at the bottom of an invoice shows whether Stripe is connected, with a **Connect Stripe** button that takes you to Integrations.

## Payments received

**Payments received** lists every payment recorded against an invoice, whichever way it was recorded.

### Read the list

The totals show what you received in the last 30 days and this year, how many payments were matched from your bank, and what's still to collect. The tabs split the list into **Matched from bank** and **Recorded by hand**.

The **Source** column tells you how each payment got here: **Matched** means it's linked to a bank deposit, and **Recorded** means someone entered it.

### Row actions

* **View invoice** opens the invoice the payment belongs to.
* **Activity & payments** opens that invoice's history.
* **Download receipt** saves a receipt for the payment.
* **Remove payment** deletes the payment after you confirm. The amount goes back onto the invoice.

Click **Receive payment** at the top of the page to record a new one.

## Common questions

### A customer paid part of an invoice. How do I record it?

Use **Receive payment** and enter the amount they paid. The invoice moves to **Partially paid** and keeps the remaining balance. See **Partial payments**.

### The payment is already in my bank feed. Do I record it again?

No. Use **Match with bank deposit** so the deposit is linked to the invoice. Recording a separate payment as well would count the money twice.

### How do I undo a payment?

Open **Activity & payments** on the invoice, or find the payment in **Payments received**, and remove it. The amount goes back onto the invoice.
