Expenses overview: see spending, bills due and missing receipts

The Expenses module is where you track money going out. You keep a list of the vendors you pay, record bills you owe and the payments that settle them, log one-off expenses, attach receipts, and see every subscription Tabby has found in your accounts.

This article introduces the module and its dashboard, the Expenses overview.

Bill, expense or bank transaction?

  • Record a bill when a vendor has invoiced you and you'll pay later. The bill sits in what you owe until you pay it.
  • Record an expense when you've already paid and the payment won't come through a connected account, for example cash or a personal card.
  • Do nothing extra for money that leaves a connected bank or card. Tabby imports those transactions and they appear in All expenses on their own.

Expenses overview

The overview is a dashboard for money going out. It reads from your bills, expenses and bank transactions and points you to what needs attention.

The top of the Expenses overview. The numbers match the list below.

  1. New bill and Log expense. Start a record without leaving the page.
  2. Ask box. Send a question about your spending to Tabby Talk. The chips under it are ready-made questions.
  3. Period. Sets the date range for the numbers and charts below.
  4. Key numbers. Spent, Bills to pay, Subscriptions and Missing receipts.
  5. Insight. The biggest change in your spending, with an Ask why button that sends the question to Tabby Talk.
  6. Spending over time. What you spent, period by period, with a dotted line for the monthly average.
  7. Bills to pay. What you owe, grouped by how soon it's due.

Choose a period and read the key numbers

Pick This month, Last month, This quarter, This year or Last year, or click Custom and enter a From and To date. The text beside the buttons shows the dates in use and the earlier period Tabby compares against.

The period, the four key numbers and the insight.

Number

What it tells you

Spent

Your total spending in the period, with the change against the prior period.

Bills to pay

What you owe vendors today, with how many bills are overdue and how much is due this week.

Subscriptions

Your subscription cost per month and the number of active subscriptions.

Missing receipts

How many expenses have no receipt, and their total value.

Bills to pay and Subscriptions show today's position, whichever period you choose.

Spending over time

Each bar is one month. The current month is shown lighter because it isn't finished. Switch from Chart to Table to read the figures as numbers.

Bills to pay

The panel splits what you owe into Overdue, Due this week and Later, then lists each bill with its vendor, reference and due date.

Overdue bills come first, then bills due this week.

  • Click Pay on a row to schedule that payment. The button changes to Scheduled.
  • Click the link at the bottom to show bills due later.
  • Click Bills to open the full list.

Categories, vendors and subscriptions

Scroll down for three breakdowns.

Where the money went, who it went to and what renews.

  1. Spending by category. Your largest categories, each with its share of spending and the change against the prior period. The arrow opens All expenses.
  2. Top vendors. Who you paid the most. The arrow opens Vendors.
  3. Subscriptions. Each subscription with its monthly cost and next renewal date. The arrow opens Subscriptions.

Latest expenses and missing receipts

The table at the bottom lists your most recent expenses with the vendor, category, the account that paid and whether a receipt is attached.

The Receipt column shows Matched, Not needed or Add receipt.

  • Filter the table with Missing receipt or Over $500.
  • Click Add receipt on a row and Tabby looks for the receipt and matches it to the expense.
  • Click a row to open it, or View all for the full list.

Ask Tabby Talk about spending

Type a question in the ask box, such as "where can I cut costs?", and press Enter. The chips do the same with one click: Where can I cut costs?, Pay bills due this week, Find missing receipts and Unused subscriptions. See Tabby Talk for how tasks and credits work.

Common questions

Should I record a bill or an expense?

Record a bill if you'll pay later, so it shows in what you owe. Record an expense if you've already paid and the payment won't arrive through a connected account.
