Get started with Tabby Talk
Tabby Talk is the AI assistant built into Tabby. You type what you need in plain English. It can answer questions about your books, and when you ask, it does bookkeeping work for you: categorizing transactions, drafting invoices, logging expenses and running reports.
It never changes your books without showing you first. Every change waits for your approval.
Tabby Talk is in beta, so you'll see a Beta label next to its name.
Agent or Chats: which one to use
Tabby Talk has two tabs. They do different jobs.
Agent | Chats | |
|---|---|---|
Use it to | Get a task done | Ask a question |
Examples | "Invoice Acme for 10 hours of consulting", "Categorize my uncategorized transactions" | "Why did software spend jump in August?", "How do credits work?" |
How it works | One working thread, with a library of ready-made tasks | Separate conversations that you can search, pin and come back to |
Cost | 0.5 credit per task | 1 credit per message |
You don't have to get this right. If you type a question into the Agent tab, Tabby opens it in Chats for you.
Open Tabby Talk
Click Tabby Talk at the top of the left sidebar. You can also reach it from other pages:
- On the Dashboard, type in the box that reads "Ask Tabby Talk to create, find or explain anything in your books".
- In Bank feeds, choose Ask Tabby Talk about it from a transaction's menu.
- In Review, click Ask Tabby.

Your first visit
The first time you land in Tabby, a welcome screen introduces Tabby Talk and offers a few things to try. If you haven't connected a bank yet, it suggests doing that first, because Tabby Talk works best with your real transactions.

Agree to the terms once
You can look around Tabby Talk freely. The first time you send a task or a message, the terms appear in place of the conversation.

They come down to three things:
- Double-check what matters. Tabby Talk can get things wrong, and it doesn't replace an accountant, tax advisor or lawyer.
- You stay in control. It reads your books to answer you and makes changes only when you ask. What you confirm counts as your own entry.
- Requests use credits. Each request, and each file Tabby Talk makes, uses your organization's monthly credits.
Click Read the full terms for the complete wording. Tick the box and click Agree and start. The request you typed is waiting in the box, so press Enter to send it. Not now closes the terms without agreeing.
What Tabby Talk can and can't do
Tabby Talk can:
- Answer questions using your organization's transactions, accounts, contacts, invoices, bills and reports.
- Prepare changes such as categories, rules, invoices and journal entries.
- Explain accounting terms and how Tabby works.
Tabby Talk can't move money, pay bills, file taxes or send anything to a government agency.
A few things to keep in mind:
- It can be wrong. Answers, figures and categories may be incomplete or incorrect, even when they sound confident. Check anything you'll use for taxes, loans or investors against your records.
- It isn't professional advice. Tabby Talk gives general information. It doesn't replace your accountant, tax advisor or lawyer.
- You approve every change. What you approve is made in your books as if you had made it yourself.

Common questions
Why do I see "Connect your bank to unlock automatic bookkeeping"?
That banner appears in the Agent tab when no bank is connected. Click Connect bank, or click the x to hide it for 7 days. See Bank connections.
Does Tabby Talk change anything without asking?
No. It shows you what will change and waits for you to approve.
