Upload bank statements

Uploading statements gets transactions into Tabby when a live connection can't. This article covers importing files, checking what was imported and managing an account that's fed by uploads.

Upload statements

Uploading is the fallback for anything a live connection can't cover. Use it when:

  • your bank isn't supported by Plaid
  • you need history older than your sync, which usually goes back 60 to 90 days
  • the account is closed

Click Upload files under Add a connection, Upload more on a statements account, or Upload statement in Bank feeds.

The Upload statement page. The numbers match the list below.

  1. Select the account the statements belong to.
  2. Add statements. Drop files here or click to choose them.
  3. Import. Shows how many files are ready.
  4. Guidance on avoiding duplicates and which files work best.
  5. Uploaded documents. Every file you've uploaded and what happened to it.
  6. CSV template. A sample file with the columns Tabby expects.

Step 1: Select the account

Click Select an account and pick the bank or card account the statements are from. Accounts are grouped into bank accounts, credit cards and statement-only accounts. Accounts with a live link say "Syncs via Plaid".

Choosing the account.

If the account isn't in Tabby yet, click New account to create it.

When you pick an account that already syncs through Plaid, Tabby tells you the date the sync starts from. Only upload statements for dates before that.

This account syncs from Jan 1, 2025, so only earlier statements should be uploaded.

Step 2: Add your files

Drag files onto the upload area, or click it to browse. Upload one file per statement period.

File types

CSV, PDF, XLS or XLSX

How many

Up to 12 files at a time

Size

Up to 10 MB each

Each file is listed with its status. Files Tabby can't use are marked in red with the reason.

Two files are ready. The third is a file type Tabby can't read.

Message

What to do

Unsupported file type. Use CSV, PDF, XLS or XLSX.

Export the statement from your bank in one of those formats.

Larger than 10 MB.

Split the statement or export a smaller date range.

Already uploaded to this account.

You don't need to upload it again. Remove it from the list.

Click the x next to a file to remove it before importing.

Step 3: Import

Click Import. Tabby reads each file and shows its progress.

Reading the statements.

When it's done, Tabby tells you how many statements were imported and how many transactions were added.

Two statements imported.

Tabby starts categorizing the new transactions right away. Click Review transactions to see them, or Upload more to add another batch.

Which files work best

  • PDF. Use the monthly statement downloaded straight from your bank. Scans and photos don't work.
  • CSV or Excel. The file needs columns for date, description and amount. If your bank's export looks different, click CSV template to download a sample you can copy your data into. The template has four columns: Date, Description, Amount and Balance.

Avoid duplicate transactions

Don't upload statements for dates a live connection has already synced. That's the most common cause of duplicates.

If you've just connected a bank, wait for the first sync to finish. New transactions can take up to 24 hours to appear. Then upload statements for older dates only.

Check your uploaded documents

The Uploaded documents table at the bottom of the Upload statement page lists every file, the account it went to, the period it covers, how many transactions it added, and its status.

Uploaded documents, with the menu for an imported file.

Use the tabs to show All, Imported or Needs attention, and the search box to find a file by name, account or period.

Status

Meaning

Imported

The file was read and its transactions are in your books.

Processing

Tabby is still reading the file.

Failed

Tabby couldn't read the file. The reason is shown under the file name.

Click the three dots on a row for more:

  • View transactions opens Bank feeds.
  • Download file gives you back the original.
  • Delete removes the file. For an imported file, its transactions are removed from your books too, and this can't be undone.

Fix a failed upload

A failed file shows the reason in red. A common one is a password-protected PDF.

A password-protected PDF. Save an unlocked copy and upload it again.

Fix the file, then upload the new copy. Or click the three dots and choose Try again if the problem was temporary.

Manage a statements account

Click Manage on a statements account to see its files.

The Manage panel for an account fed by uploads.

  • Files lists every statement with its period and transaction count. Click the trash icon to remove one. Each file adds its transactions once, so uploading the same period twice won't create duplicates.
  • Upload more files takes you to the Upload statement page with this account already selected.
  • Stop uploading every month offers to connect the bank through Plaid. Pick this account when Plaid asks. New transactions will then import on their own, and your uploaded history stays.
  • Remove deletes the account and its uploaded files.

Removing a statements account.

Important: Removing a statements account also deletes the transactions that came from its files. Removing a bank connection does not delete anything already imported.

Common questions

I see duplicate transactions after uploading a statement

The statement probably covered dates the bank connection had already synced. Open the Upload statement page, find the file under Uploaded documents, and delete it. Its transactions are removed with it.

Can I switch from uploads to a live connection later?

Yes. Open Manage on the statements account and use Stop uploading every month, or connect the bank from Add a connection. When an account matches one you've been uploading for, Tabby combines them and keeps your history.
