Split and match transactions in Bank feeds
Some transactions need more than a category. Split a transaction when one payment covers several things. Match a transaction when it's the bank side of something already in your books, such as a customer paying an invoice.
Split a transaction
Use a split when one payment covers more than one thing. A typical case is an internet bill that is 60% business and 40% personal.
- Open the category picker and click Split transaction. You can also choose Split transaction from the row menu.
- Enter an amount and a category for each part. Tick Mark as personal for any part that isn't a business expense.
- Click Add another split if you need more than two parts. Split evenly divides the total equally.
- Check the totals at the bottom. Left to assign must be $0.00.
- Click Save split.

Each part can carry its own class. Click Add class on a split line to set it.
After you save, the row shows Split with the number of parts. Click it to edit the split. To undo it, open the row menu and choose Remove split. The transaction goes back to the category it had before.

Match a transaction
Matching links a bank transaction to something already in your books, so the same money isn't counted twice. A customer payment that lands in your bank should be matched to the invoice it pays, for example. Otherwise you'd record that income once on the invoice and again on the deposit.
- Click the three dots on the row and choose Match transaction.
- Under What is it?, pick the type of record.
- Select the record on the right. Tabby marks its top pick as Best match and tells you why, for example "Exact amount · Same name · 2 days apart".
- Check the bar at the bottom. It compares the transaction amount with what you selected.
- Click Match.

The types you see depend on the direction of the money.
Money in | Money out |
|---|---|
Invoice payment | Bill payment |
Sales receipt | Expense |
Transfer | Transfer |
Credit card payment | Credit card payment |
A few rules apply:
- Amounts must be within 5% of each other, such as $100.00 and $98.00.
- Transfers need an opposite amount in another one of your accounts.
- A record that's already matched can't be used again.
- For invoice and bill payments you can select more than one record, which helps when a customer pays several invoices with one transfer.
By default the list only shows records close to the transaction amount. Click the Close to chip to turn that off and see everything.
For a partial payment on an invoice, match from the invoice instead. Go to Sales, then Invoices, open the invoice's menu and choose Match with bank deposit. The Review guide has the steps.
A matched transaction moves to the Matched tab. To undo a match, open the row menu and choose Remove match.

I see the same transaction twice
This usually happens when a statement was uploaded for dates the bank connection had already synced. Delete the duplicate, or delete the uploaded file from the Upload statement page. See Avoid duplicates.
