Accounting technical
Is Tabby real double-entry accounting?
Yes. Tabby keeps a full double-entry general ledger. Every transaction posts a balanced debit and credit to accounts in your chart of accounts, and you can open the journal entry behind any transaction.
Can I customize the chart of accounts?
Yes. Add, edit, merge, deactivate or delete accounts, set account codes and tax codes, and make sub-accounts by choosing a parent account. Tabby can also suggest accounts for your business type. You can import or export the chart of accounts as a file.
Does Tabby support sub-accounts?
Yes. Choose a parent account when you create or edit an account, and the sub-account rolls up under the parent in reports.
Does Tabby have classes, like QuickBooks classes or locations?
Yes. Classes let you track profit by property, project, location or service line. Pro includes up to 10 classes and Growth includes unlimited classes and sub-classes. You can run Profit & Loss by class and compare classes side by side.
Can I make journal entries?
Yes, on Growth. Create, post, edit, duplicate, reverse or delete journal entries, attach files, and import entries from a CSV with Date, Reference, Account, Debit, Credit and Description columns.
Can I do bank reconciliation in Tabby?
Yes, on Growth. Choose the account, enter the statement's ending date and balance, tick the transactions that appear on your statement, and finish when the difference is zero. Tabby saves a Reconciliation Report for each period, and you can save a draft or undo a reconciliation.
How often should I reconcile?
Reconcile each bank and card account once a month, after the statement closes. It catches missing or duplicated transactions before they reach your reports.
Does Tabby support cash and accrual accounting?
Yes. Pro and Growth let you switch reports between cash and accrual basis. Cash basis counts income and expenses when money moves; accrual counts them when you invoice or receive a bill.
How do I set an opening balance?
Enter it when you add the account to your chart of accounts, or record a journal entry dated before your first imported transaction. Use the balance from your bank statement on that date.
Does the Balance Sheet include owner's equity and retained earnings?
Yes. The Balance Sheet includes equity accounts such as owner's capital, owner's draws and retained earnings, and you can add custom equity accounts.
How does Tabby handle owner's draws and personal spending?
Money you take out for yourself is recorded as an owner's draw, not an expense. Personal transactions on a mixed account can be marked personal so they stay out of your Profit & Loss.
How are transfers between my own accounts handled?
Match the two sides of the transfer, the money leaving one account and the same amount arriving in another, and Tabby records it as a transfer. Transfers don't show up as income or expenses.
How are loan payments recorded?
The principal part of a loan payment reduces the loan liability and the interest part is an expense. Split the payment so only the interest hits your Profit & Loss.
How are credit card payments recorded?
A payment from your checking account to your card is a transfer that reduces the card's liability. The individual card purchases are the expenses, so the payment isn't counted twice.
Does Tabby support multi-entity or consolidated books?
Yes, on Growth. Consolidated Profit & Loss, Balance Sheet, and Receivables and Payables reports roll up several businesses you own.
Can I lock my books after closing a period?
Reconciling an account marks those transactions as reconciled. [Confirm] whether a separate period lock or closing date is available.
